Carl S. Wilkins, MD

Carl S. Wilkins, MD, is a vitreoretinal surgeon and specialist in ocular inflammatory disease. Dr. Wilkins received his bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Vanderbilt University, and subsequently returned to his native Florida for medical school at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami. He completed his surgical internship and ophthalmology residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and stayed in New York for a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.  He then completed a fellowship in ocular immunology and uveitis at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was an assistant professor at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai before joining MERSI in August 2025. 

 

Dr. Wilkins is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American Uveitis Society. He has special research interests in drug delivery studies, as well as cohort studies of characteristics and outcomes of rare diseases. His clinical interests include diabetic retinopathy, vitreoretinal surgery, anterior and posterior segment surgery in uveitic diseases, cataract and secondary lens surgery, as well as clinical trials. He is currently the principal investigator for the multicenter Acute Retinal Necrosis (ARN) cohort study.
