Dr. Chang First to Perform Susvimo Surgical Implant in MA
On October 16, Dr. Chang became the first surgeon in Massachusetts to surgically implant Susvimo, a groundbreaking treatment option for patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME).
Susvimo is a small, implantable device that gradually releases medication into the eye over time. This innovative approach eliminates the need for frequent eye injections. Instead, it continuously delivers medication for up to six months, allowing patients to spend less time in the clinic and more time enjoying life.
What is Susvimo? A New Way to Treat Wet AMD
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with wet AMD, you may want to consider this exciting new treatment option.
What is Wet AMD?
Wet AMD is a chronic eye disease that causes vision loss in the central part of your field of vision, which is responsible for seeing fine details. This condition occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina, leaking fluid or blood and damaging the retina. Without timely treatment, wet AMD can lead to severe and permanent vision loss.
A New Treatment Option
Susvimo provides an innovative way to deliver medication for wet AMD without the need for monthly injections. Instead of requiring frequent shots, a small implant is surgically placed in your eye. This implant slowly releases medication, specifically a drug called ranibizumab (the same medication used in traditional injections), over time. You will only need to refill the implant about twice a year. This method is particularly suitable for patients who:
– Have been receiving injections for wet AMD
– Prefer a more convenient treatment schedule
– Are medically eligible for implant surgery
