On November 4, 2019 C. Stephen and Frances Foster Lecture in Ocular Immunology was held at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. The lectureship was established to recognize the groundbreaking work of C. Stephen Foster, MD, FACS, FACR, founder, and president of Massachusetts Eye and Research Institution. In 1977, Dr. Foster joined the Cornea Service at Mass. Eye and Ear where he was also the Director of the Ophthalmology Residency Training Program. After 30 years on the full-time faculty, he established his own private practice, Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution (MERSI), a cutting-edge practice with its own chemotherapy infusion suite phlebotomy lab. Dr. Foster established the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation to support research at MERSI and continues his research and teaching activities, training fellows as a clinical professor of ophthalmology at Harvard medical school. He has also published 1,000 published papers and 14 textbooks. The Foster Lecture will be given annually by an invited eminent authority on a clinical, research, or therapeutic subject pertaining to ocular inflammatory disease.
